Cold War Era Rocket Ship Playgrounds

The above work is credited to Artist Lauren Orchowski.  She created a great photographic series of 23 Cold War era rocket-theme playground structures, called Rocket Science, made with an 8 x 10 inch view camera between 2005 and 2008 all over the United States. This brought back back memories of my former pre-school in Elkhart, IN (I think it was called Seven Dwarfs Nursery School).  Regardless, we had a very similar rocket ship.  Actually, now that I consider it, I remember most of the playgrounds of my childhood playing host to this fleet of  missle slides. :)

A Fractal Fairytale

On March 5th, 2009, in a brief moment of Existentialism, I posted a Tweet (which then subsequently updated my Facebook status) that I think that "all of life as we know it and the universe is fractal!".  

Mike Bonifer, someone whom I had the pleasure of meeting at an event a couple of months ago in Salt Lake City where he spoke on the topic of improvisation, replied:

"It's good. Sounds like the start of a Fractal Fairy Tale...". 

To which, I replied "Indeed.....lets improvise one via our status updates ;)".

Little did I know that it would set off a chain of events over the next 48 hours that would result in a improvised multi-media fairytale co-created via Facebook by Mike Bonifer, John Woodiel, and I.  I am providing the outcome of this collaborative below so as to preserve it in a public setting and therefore share it with a broader audience.  Enjoy!

-Prologue-

Jeremi Karnell: In the beginning, there was darkness, and then BANG! An infinity complex of time, space, and matter.
John Woodiel: Without a sound, the matter took on a life of it's own. Moving and expanding like the slow formation of ice crystals or snowflakes, it became more violent and complex while maintaining it's mesmerizing serenity.

Mike Bonifer: Once upon a time, the Number One was all there was. And it was lonely. Number One gave its loneliness a name. And that is how Zero came to be.

Mike Bonifer: One and Zero began to dance, and their dance became an idea and their idea became code and in this code they discovered meaning.

Jeremi Karnell: From supergaltic to subatomic, the continuum wrapped its arms around all that was and all that will be.

Mike Bonifer: One and Zero had a word for the meaning they had discovered. They called it Who-ha.

John Woodiel: Who-ha had an ulterior motive. Who-ha ultimately tempts zero to consume from a mystical concept alluding to the interconnectedness of all life, telling zero that it will not lead to the permanent termination of the biological functions that define a living organism. Zero succumbs, and convinces One to do so as well. Aware now of their exposed nature, they try to cover this that is embarrassing or disagreeable. And hide from the sight of The Continuum.

Mike Bonifer: Fearful of the Continuum, One and Zero dance only in darkness. They call out Who-Ha's name, hoping to recover the mystical concept and hear once more the promise of convergence. From this darkness, two offspring emerge, twin points of light named Knowledge and Wisdom.

Jeremi Karnell: This jealousy consumed the universe. Because of this, the cosmic melody faded away and the dance between One and Zero faltered. Oh, null, nil, zilch or naught; regardless of what name the Number One called Zero this amphibian between being and non-being sat silent as the air is to nothing.

Planet B-Boy at Tribeca Film Festival

Tim Yu reports via the Cool Hunting Web Site that The Tribeca Film Festival's Drive-In Series will be screening Planet B-Boy, a feature-length documentary on breakdancing. Planet B-Boy depicts the global resurgence of breakdancing. "From the outskirts of Paris to the suburbs of Seoul, the film serves as a reminder of hip-hop's influence on different and diverse cultures. "

The Louver in Abu Dabi

I recently uncovered via Tropolism's RSS Feed.  that The Louvre has licensed its name to Abu Dhabi's previously-titled "classical museum" for $520 million.  Jean Nouvel, the designer of the planned space for the Louver in the United Arab Emirates,
features a huge, flattened dome over an open-air arrangement of smaller buildings. "It's like a village, shaded with a space dome."  Pictured above is the underside of the dome. Absolutly beautiful!

Il Paradiso Di Frassina Photo Set

San Quirico , Italy 2006 Photo Set

Note: One photo you may want to spend some time viewing is  is the women with the umbrella, red shoes, next to red rose petals.    Many have asked me if this photo was staged.  You will see by the additional shots I have provided, that indeed it was not.  She was actually just a shop keeper on her way to open her antique store.  It does bring home the point regarding how surreal and beautiful Italy can be.

Last Daily Photo Post from Italy

Below represent the last set of four photos that I plan to upload this week from the National Geographic Expedition I am attending in Tuscany, Italy (the workshop ends tomorrow and I plan to take a break from both blogging and photography for a couple of days).  These shots were taken yesterday in Montepuiciano.  As you will see for yourself, I spent this day working on shadows and exposure.  Enjoy!
